GRANITE TRAIL TREKKING ITINERARY – ASINARA
The trail starts from the picturesque Fornelli pier and winds along the dirt road towards the east, opening the door to a journey through the southern part of the island. Through the Granite Trail, you’ll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the unique geological features of this territory.
After Retrodunale, the first pond welcomes hikers, who follow the trail to the left and venture inland until intersecting the road that connects the Fornelli superprison to the Santa Maria prison facility. The ascent towards the top of the hill reveals breathtaking views, culminating in the descent towards Punta Barbarossa. Along the way, Asinara’s granite accompanies hikers, offering a predominantly bike-friendly landscape.
Picturesque coves, Mediterranean vegetation, reeds, and temporary ponds create a fascinating succession of natural environments, while the beaches of Punta Li Giorri introduce a more challenging phase of the trail, with the discovery of three granite quarries and the evidence of past artisanal activities.
At Cala Sant’Andrea, the final part of the route, hikers follow the coast overlooking a brackish water mirror and the strictly protected area, before returning to the paved road, thus completing the circuit and returning to the starting point.
During the excursion, expert guides will provide a rich overview of the biodiversity, geomorphology, and historical aspects of the Parco dell’Isola, enriching the experience with detailed information and interesting facts.
